The hope was that once people were made aware of the dangers of single-use plastics they would want to change their behavior. Surely, once they were aware of the suffering and deaths caused on land as well as in the oceans they would do something.
We were wrong. Not only did people not want to give up the convenience of plastic bags and bottles, many were offended we even suggested it!
It is hard to believe how little progress has been made in 10 years. While we continue to focus on the impact of the unnecessary use of plastics on our environment and to our oceans & streams, world wide mega-streams of plastic debris continue to flow into our oceans and streams. The worst offenders … single-use plastic bags, bottles, straws, balloons! All are unnecessary and all are deadly if not disposed of properly!
Some progress has been made, but not nearly enough. So, this year our focus will be on getting the word out. What that means “in your face” out, visually not confrontationally. It means wearing apparel as a way of informing and educating. Writing and blogging are no longer enough. Talking to each other is akin to preaching to the choir, as the expression goes.
If you want to make an impact, consider purchasing one of our tee shirts. Wear them when you go shopping, to school, or go to the beach. Our shirts are billboards to the world and those around us that we care. If and when you strike up a conversation, be armed with facts if people ask you about why you are Saying No to Plastics.
Good intentions have to be transformed into real actions. Remember, we are what we leave behind!
Wildlife charity WWF say that figures show that 341 rhinos have been killed in 2011 so far, which has already overtaken last year’s total of 333. South Africa National Parks keep a record of the number of rhinos who have been found with their horns sawn off. WWF think the rise is down to more people using rhino horn in Vietnamese traditional medicine. BBC
SAVAGE TREATMENT OF RHINOS
It always comes down to cold hard cash, that combined with the cultural heritageexcuse. You know, our ancestors did it, so we continue to do it and the consequences to damned because it’s tradition!
Shark finning and killing rhinos for their horns are one in the same hideous unforgivable act. Cutting off shark fins for soup and killing rhinos for their horns to used for ornamental and pseudo medicinal reasons are barbaric acts of cruelty.
And so it is with a great deal of sadness that it is being reported that the sub-species black rhino is now officially extinct!
GENEVA — The Western Black Rhino of Africa has been declared officially extinct, and two other subspecies of rhinoceros are close to meeting the same fate, a leading conservation group said Thursday.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature said a recent reassessments of the Western Black Rhino had led it to declare the species extinct, adding that the Northern White Rhino of central Africa is now “possibly extinct” in the wild and the Javan Rhino is “probably extinct” in Vietnam, after poachers killed the last animal there in 2010.
Take a good look at that suffering animal, it should be embedded into your consciousness. Now, what are you going to do to change this?
Lost in the din of the BP Deepwater Disaster oil spill was the announcement that the United States and the Obama Administration have been major players in back room negotiations that will allow Japan, Norway, and Iceland to restart commercial whaling.
